Background Information

Sara Softball was created in 2013 in loving memory of Sara Rose Hougom, a West Salem native and Western Technical College student, in hope to create a stronger community. Sara was shot and killed in her apartment on a Monday afternoon while getting ready to go to work by an unknown intruder. The tournment is organized and operated annually by the Chi Phi Fraternity - Pi Theta Chapter at the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse.

Sara was a close friend to many of the Chi Phi Brothers and girlfriend to Chi Phi Alumnus Scott Hogan. The Pi Theta Chapter is honored to hold this annual charity softball tournament in memory of Sara and to promote violence awareness and prevention in La Crosse, Wisconsin and its surrounding communities.

Boys and Girls Club

We like to work with the Boys and Girls Club as much as possible since they are our National Philanthropy Partner. Just recently on Thursday October 30th, as a chapter, we went to our local La Crosse Boys & Girls club for their huge Halloween Party. The party was set up throughout the whole building. There was a haunted maze in one area, an open play area in another area, and the whole gym was set up with a bunch of different game stations and a moon bounce. The stations consisted of relay races, basketball, obstacle course, floor sliding, etc. All the kids also received candy at each station. It was a lot of fun working at it and all of the brothers look forward to doing it again.
