During the 19th century, there were three secret Brotherhoods, all bearing the name Chi Phi. Each was oblivious of the existence of the others, yet each Brotherhood was established on the ideals of friendship of man with man. They are known to us as the Princeton Order, founded at Princeton College in 1824, the Southern Order, founded at the University of North Carolina in 1858, and the Hobart Order, founded at Hobart College in 1860. The Princeton Order and the Hobart Order combined in 1867 to form the Northern Order. Then, in 1874, the Northern Order joined with the Southern Order to form the Chi Phi Fraternity.
